They were dubbed the Children of 9/11. Many spent that day waiting in vain for their mothers or fathers to return home. Some were too young to understand what was happening. A few wouldn be born for several more months to mothers still mourning the death of their newborns fathers. Ten years later, they are still the Children of 9/11. Their ages now range from 9 to 28. Over the past decade, they grown up. Many are thriving. Most say they are still hurting. They had some help. Nonprofit organizations, including Tuesday Children, have assisted thousands of 9/11 children with counseling and support groups. Numerous college scholarships are available for their use. Several free summer camps including America Camp, Camp Haze and Project Common Bond were started to help the children come together annually to cope with their losses. But studies show some 9/11 kids have struggled. New YorkPresbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center tracked 45 children who lost loved ones in the attacks and found more than half suffered from anxiety disorders. Nearly a third showed signs of posttraumatic stress disorders or separation anxiety, according to the 2007 study. Some of the 9/11 children say they taken comfort in the attention and extra care they received from their schools and communities after they lost their parents so publicly. Others say they have grown weary of the attention and try to keep their ties to 9/11 secret because they dread being singled out every time Sept. 11 rolls around again. Stephen Bauer was one of an estimated 1,500 children who lost parents who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald, the financial firm with offices on the upper floors of the World Trade Center. Bauer, who was 14 when his father died, said most 9/11 children don want to be treated any differently from anyone else who has lost a parent. "Don be afraid," said Bauer, 24, of Red Bank. "We not lepers. We normal people who had a terrible instance happen to us." Gina DiFazio, who was 10 when her father died in the attacks, said the legacy of the 9/11 children shouldn be one of pain and sadness. Instead, it should be an uplifting example of the resilience of children who endure tragedies every day and go on to live great lives. "People were so worried about it defining us as human beings," said DiFazio, 20, of Union Township in Hunterdon County. "There are so many more things I done since then. I don really want people coming into this 10th anniversary looking at us as if we broken. Some of us? Maybe. But definitely not all of us." Stacey AfflittoWain learned she was expecting her second child two days after 9/11. Her husband, Daniel T. Afflitto, 32, was killed in the Sept. 11 attacks while working as a Cantor Fitzgerald partner on the 104th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. He died without knowing that a second son, who would bear his name, was on the way. Ten years later, young Daniel knows the story of 9/11 and his father death. "I was in your tummy," Daniel, 9, said to his mother of his whereabouts the day "airplanes hit the twin towers after Osama bin Laden sent people out to brainwash them into highjacking the airplanes." His older brother, Joseph, who was 7 months old when his father died, also knows the story. "One plane landed in a field in Pennsylvania," said Joseph, 10. "It makes me mad that he did that." The little the Afflitto boys know about the elder Daniel they learned through stories and photographs. Daniel knows his brother Joseph is a spitting image of their father. Afflitto with his son Joseph, who was 7 months old when Daniel died on Sept. 11. He also knows Joseph dances "funny" just like Dad, and his older brother pouts his lips the same way Dad did when he wanted something. Pictures of his father doing these things adorn a collage hanging in Daniel bedroom. Their mother also tells the boys young Daniel shares his father "goofy" personality, and both boys have inherited some of his athleticism. He played soccer; they play baseball, basketball and lacrosse. AfflittoWain met Daniel when he hired her as a trader at Cantor Fitzgerald. When the two began dating, she left the company for a job with another firm working on the stock exchange floor, per a company policy barring relationships among coworkers. She was home in Manalapan on maternity leave with her older son when Daniel died. Each September since their father death, the boys have attended a 9/11 memorial. Each June, they also attend a fundraising dinner set up by their paternal grandparents in Daniel honor. But AfflittoWain said her sons don understand the significance of this year milestone. "All they know is memorials. It the same for them every year of their lives," said AfflittoWain, who remarried a few years ago.
